Convolvulus sarmentosus

Convolvulus sarmentosus

There is a short window of opportunity for many of the plant species on Socotra that are most sensitive to the winter rains for growth and blossom. For one this is the time the goats have plenty of grasses, and as such leave a species like this one alone long enough for it to reach […]

Purple-throat Morning Glory (Ipomoea sinensis)

Purple-throat Morning Glory (Ipomoea sinensis)

Socotra is still vibrant with life after the generous winter rains this year. Perhaps it is due to the La Nina, and this will be the best winter rains in a few years. This specimen was large and vibrant, a sign of plenty of moisture. In a year of drought the growth will be stunted, […]

Convolvulus sarmentosus UV

Convolvulus sarmentosus UV

Yet another Convolvulaceae with identical color in UV light! I have yet to encounter one, no matter ho many different colors in visible light, that is not the same in UV!

Convolvulus sarmentosus

Convolvulus sarmentosus

Resembles Convolvulus sarmentosus, but its petals are rounded outwards opposed to this one which are flattened and pointing inwards at the mid-nerve of the petals. Also grows on lower elevations than this (1500 meters elevation), but few are intact as they are eaten by goats and cows. A very small plant, but that I think […]

Evolvulus alsinoides UV

Evolvulus alsinoides UV

Almost same color in visible as in UV (although UV light is only an approximate and subjective projection, it is after all invisible to humans!), but the brighter center in visible is dark in UV, making it blander in UV.

Evolvulus alsinoides

Evolvulus alsinoides

This plant is one of many interesting species I found in a very small area in a valley at 320 meters altitude. A river runs through on the valley floor, supporting lots of more water demanding species, but just a few meters up the mountain slopes a rocky a harsher environment with lots of plant […]

Ipomoea sinensis

Ipomoea sinensis

The cliffs on the way to Shuab beach of west Socotra have lots of interesting seemingly inaccessible locations for goats. At least it looks that way from the ocean. As I climbed I saw the sign of goats everywhere, but fortunately many small plants were in bloom like this one. I later realized that goats […]

Convolvulus glomeratus

Convolvulus glomeratus

One of many species in the bindweed or morning glory family I found on Socotra. This was growing on the beach of Shuab in the west of the island. Native range is Sahara & Sahel to northwestern India.

I have yet to encounter one species of Convolvulaceae that is not like this in UV! Either multicolored, or one color in visible, but all the same in UV. Native range is Sahara & Sahel to northwestern India.

Pantanal Morning Glory 02 (Ipomoea sp)

Pantanal Morning Glory 02 (Ipomoea sp)

During my stay at SouthWild Pantanal there were many species of morning glory in bloom, and due to the size of the inflorescence you see them as beacons of color amongst the lush green landscape. But without the leaves they can be hard to identify. Please help me identify it – leave a comment 🙂

Morning glory (Ipomoea incarnata)

An unusual flower, resembling a Petunia. I only encountered this species on Santiago. Perhaps it’s endemic to Santiago? Native range is tropical south America.

On the boat journey to Angel Falls, there was only one section where we had to disembark and walk for about 20 minutes on the open savanna. This flower was located along this path. Please help me identify it – leave a comment!
