Catasetum schunkei is a very unusual species of orchid in that it has male and female flowers. Here yous see what appears as two different species – the flowers are after all very different.
The female plant has pale green flowers, and the colorful ones are on the male plant.
For humans to see these orchid one must usually be in the canopy, as that is where these epiphytic plants grow. These plants have found a low-hanging alternative on this tree leaning over the oxbow lake at Amazon Research and Conservation center (ARCC).
This is my first encounter with the catasetum orchids.
Native range is Peru.
