Crotalaria strigulosa

Crotalaria strigulosa

A very variable species with leaves ranging from linear, as seen here, to oblong or broadly obovate. It has been untouched by the goats and is growing in a veritable herbal garden next to the tall cliffs of the northeastern Socotra. This was an unexpected joy to experience as it is very rare to find […]

Indigofera pseudointricata

Indigofera pseudointricata

The indigofera pseudointricata is never left alone by the Socotra’s many goats, but for now this individual is left alone to grow, as the winter rains made the grasses lush and abundant. Also found in Somalia. Elevation: 91 meters.

Tephrosia odorata

Tephrosia odorata

There are many species of legumes on Socotra, ranging from prostrate, to shrub or trees. This one is of the inconspicuous ones, but when in bloom its large flowers are very attractive. Elevation: 671 meters. Endemic.

Skogkløver | Zigzag Clover (Trifolium medium)

Zigzag Clover (Trifolium medium) Oslo, Norway At first you might think you’ve encountered a red clover (Trifolium pretense). It is after all red, and it is a clover. But take a look at those elongated leaves, and the hue and color of the flowers. They are richer and more vibrant than that of the red […]

Lotus ononopsis

Lotus ononopsis

This plant is one of many interesting species I found in a very small area in a valley at 320 meters altitude. A river runs through on the valley floor, supporting lots of more water demanding species, but just a few meters up the mountain slopes a rocky a harsher environment with lots of plant […]

Lotus ononopsis UV

This one was a surprise in UV all dark as it is, except for two tiny openings in the center.

Indigofera nephrocarpa UV

No surprising patterns in UV for this one!

Indigofera nephrocarpa

Indigofera nephrocarpa

A comma-shaped and hairy seed pod.

Indigofera nephrocarpa

Indigofera nephrocarpa

A beautiful specimen of the species found during my climb up the cliffs on the way to Shuab beach. It was still healthy with no signs of water shortage, but that I think was only days away, so it had little time left to produce mature seeds. The heat of the sun is shorter on […]

Senna holosericea

Senna holosericea

Quite common on lower levels, and here around the Detwah lagoon I found it widespread around the campground. Goats leave these, and most of the pea family alone, so I found them in bloom and with fruit, despite lots of goats in this nature reserve.

This flower is more interesting in UV, as the veins and the center has a darker more pronounced color compared to the more or less all-yellow in visible light.

Dioclea grandiflora

The oxbow lake just a few meters from the buildings of the Amazon Research and Conservation Center (ARCC) is an excellent way to get close to flowers on trees and vines that otherwise are out of reach – many meters up towards the canopy. It looks like Dioclea grandiflora, but I’m not certain, so please […]

The protected areas of Chapada dos Guimaraes National Park is a treasure trove of plant species, and I was like a kid in a candy store! Please help me identify it – leave a comment 🙂

Chamaecrista sp UV

Perhaps even more beautiful in UV as the dark center is contrasting the bright petals, opposed to all yellow we humans see?

Pantanal Plant 50

Wherever you go in Pantanal you’ll see wonderful species of plants, and thus I stop to photograph even as was on my way out of Pantanal. This is one I’ve not encountered before so naturally I needed to look at it and take some shots. Please help me identify it – leave a comment!

Pantanal plant 48

I encountered many species in the Fabaceae family in Pantanal, perhaps more than any other place I’ve visited, and the land around SouthWild Pantanal was rich with flowering plants.

Pantanal plant 48 UV

Perhaps even more beautiful in UV? There is no mistake in the plant’s advertising to the pollinating insects – the tidbits are at the centre of the bright petals!

Camptosema paraguariense

A very slender plant.

Camptosema paraguariense

One of many species in the fabaceae family growing around SouthWild Pantanal. This one I found by the trail along the river, in open landscape with plenty of sun. In the wet season it will be submerged. It’s a slender vine-like plant.

Bauhinia glabra

A very unique growth, which is sufficient to identify the species. Unfortunately I found none with foliage – it also has a very distinct shape, hoof-like leaves.

Macroptilium lathyroides UV

In visible light this is a very dark flower, but in UV lots of light is reflected, and seen here as yellowish and without any darker areas around the center of the flower which is where the insects should be directed if the plant is to be pollinated. With this very unusual design I wonder […]

Macroptilium lathyroides

A very peculiar layout of the flower! First time I see this species. One of many growing right outside the houses of SouthWild Pantanal.

Gjerdevikke (Vicia sepium)

Lupinus gilbertianus

The very last couple of kilometres of road to the plateau of Itatiaia National Park is blocked by the park entrance, and even though you can drive to the camping site by the small dam, it’s not worth it! You’ll miss all the magnificent flora and fauna along the dirt road. In the rainy season […]

Rundskolm (Anthyllis vulneraria)

Rundskolm (Anthyllis vulneraria)

Galapagos Acacia (Acacia rorudiana)

Galápagos Acacia (Acacia rorudiana)

This looks almost like a different species, as the thorns are longer, and the new growth is red opposed to light green on the other photo. I don’t remember if I shot the same tree or not, but perhaps the red is due to direct exposure to the sun, while the other is in dappled […]

Erythrina edulis

The Erythrina family has some of the most wonderful infloresences of any trees, and this one is no exception. I arrived at San Isidro as the twilight was approaching. I was checking out the grounds and was greeted by this one branch hanging down low enough for me to photograph it. Some species grow incredibly […]

Chamaecrista desvauxii

The boat journey to Angel Falls was interrupted only once by a long section of rapids. Here we had to disembark and walk for about 20 minutes on the open savanna. This flowering shrub was located along this path.
