Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco)

It’s a rare opportunity when you find toucan’s nest, and even more so when you can follow their food delivery to the chicks.

Here it’s coming with a large cicada in the beak.

Sometimes the cicadas are not dead when they are handed over to the chicks and are able to escape, and one is doing just so here and have reached the tail of the incoming hunter. What a coincidence!

Most regard this species of toucan as a bird of beauty, but it’s a ravenous and ruthless killer which will raid other birds’ nests.

Yet another cicada. The cicadas are plentiful, and are almost on every tree trunk – yet the toucans do not serve them to the chicks exclusively. That would have been the easy way, but they chose a varied diet!
