Red-legged Golden Orb-web Spider (Nephila sumptuosa)

Red-legged Golden Orb-web Spider (Nephila sumptuosa)

The only one of this species I encountered. A magnificent, large spider! I also found a small male on the outer fringes of the large web made by this female. Perhaps it will manage to mate before it too is eaten? Altitude: 582 meters.

Socotra spider 01

Socotra spider 01

I found this spider on the edge of the mangrove forest of Shuab beach in West Socotra. The web was huge – a really busy spider that seems to have plenty of food to go around, judging on the energy requirement to produce such a large web.

Today Lima with suburbs is huge and have claimed large land areas that were previously lagoons and wetlands made from rivers and springs fed by the Andes. Fortunately there is a tiny portion protected in Lima – Pantanos de Villa Wildlife Refuge – a Ramsar site. When I visited it was low season in regards […]

Diversity in the virgin rainforest surrounding the amazon Research and Conservation Center is incredible, and I think if I only focused on spiders I would have needed many stays here to identify them all. Please help me identify it – leave a comment 🙂

Golden silk orb-weaver (Nephila sp)

Golden silk orb-weaver (Nephila sp)

The virgin forest surrounding the Amazon Research and Conservation Center is home to a large number for spider species, and this one was perhaps the most visible of all, as the web was hanging out in the open, between trees, at less than 2 meters above the ground. Please help me identify it – leave […]

Bolivian Salmon Pink Tarantula (Acanthoscurria chacoana)

Bolivian Salmon Pink Tarantula (Acanthoscurria chacoana)

Night time in Pantanal is as exciting as the daytime, and during my several night walks – mostly focusing on the huge number of frog species – I came across this beauty very slowly climbing this large tree. The land around this tree is slowly being submerged, and all the new pools around this tree […]

Bolivian Salmon Pink Tarantula (Acanthoscurria chacoana)

A large tree Just a few metres from the Cuiaba river in Porto Jofre housed an extended family of this species. They ranged from adults like this one, to very small juvies. Some were just sitting inside their preferred crack and others were out in the open hunting. This was the bravest of them all, […]

Orb weaver (Alpaida sp)

Orb weaver (Alpaida sp)

The path alongside the Iguaçu Falls are great for observing insects, and this spider species was numerous and extremely busy mending webs or creating new ones.

Wandering spider (Phoneutria reidyi)

Deep inside Noel Kempff Mercado National Park there are few traces of human activities, and no other way to sleep than making a campground for the night. There are several campgrounds, but as this is the jungle and few visitors come here, they are quickly reclaimed by nature. This location is at the very end […]
