Sterculia africana ssp. socotrana

Sterculia africana ssp. socotrana

For me the trail to the Hoq cave was so much more interesting than the cave itself, as here you’ll see incredible specimens of so many endemic species like the sterculia africana ssp. socotrana tree which I did not encounter elsewhere during my 14 day journey throughout the island.

Bracted Fanpetals (Sida ciliaris) UV

Bracted Fanpetals (Sida ciliaris) UV

In UV I think this flower is as beautiful, perhaps even more than in visible light! The patterns, and shades are at least as intricate and detailed in UV as in visible light. That’s what I find so exciting – I never know from my visual standpoint whether or not the flower is a beauty […]

Bracted Fanpetals (Sida ciliaris)

Bracted Fanpetals (Sida ciliaris)

Yet another plant producing beautiful flowers that makes it an interesting candidate for a human’s garden. For me the natural garden of SouthWild Pantanal was just as it should be – cultivated land in the process of regaining natural vegetation. Native range is tropical and subtropical America.

The soil on this part of Pantanal (between Corumbá and Miranda) is in many places fine sand – just like a desert or a beach. Just after a couple of hundred metres on the private road leading to Pousada Xaraés you’ll encounter the deep sand – only passable by large trucks and 4x4s. It was […]

Wild cocoa (Herrania mariae)

Wild cocoa (Herrania mariae)

The fruit starts off in an upright position, and as it matures, and the weight increases, gravity will eventually win and drag it to a hanging position. This tree had no mature fruits – perhaps someone had picked them for personal consumption?

Wild cocoa (Herrania mariae)

Wild cocoa (Herrania mariae)

The inflorescence of the Herrania is otherwordly beautiful and mysterious, and unlike any I have encountered. Of course there are countless beauties in the primary forest of Yasuni, but most are in the canopy. The wild cocoa has a different strategy that makes it so accessible to passers by like me – on the dark […]
