Rainbow Metalmark (Caria trochilus)

A large tree had fallen down, and under the root a small pond had formed. This together with a cone of light where the canopy of the fallen tree once was, I found so many interesting insects that had found this temporary opportunity in the forest surrounding the Amazon Research and Conservation Center (ARCC) in Peru.

Although this species is exceptionally colorful, its very hard to spot but this species does not fly far, and if you can follow it in flight you are often lucky to see where it lands, as I was. Sometimes it sat down in the wet mud around the pond, other times on leaves like here.

Unfortunately I was unable to get close to it before I lost it. I’m certain it was right in front of me, but after some time I had to move on.
