Giant Otter (Pteronura brasiliensis)

I was busy photographing butterflies on the river bank when I heard some sounds from the other side of the river. It was the otters!

Finally I had the chance to see them – my first time! I jumped into the boat and we carefully closed in on their location – a very dense brush.

As we closed in this adult checked us out, but did not sound the alarm. A good sign that this region has long ago ended the hunt for their fur.

Unfortunately their location on land was behind impenetrable vegetation, so this was all I got, but I was and am very grateful to have had this encounter.

Giant Otter (Pteronura brasiliensis)

The giant otter is close to critically endangered, but hopefully large farms like Fazenda San Fransico contribute to their rise back to normal numbers and range.
