Lavandula nimmoi

Lavandula nimmoi

Lavandula nimmoi is a favorite of the goats of Socotra, so why is this one seemingly untouched? The winter rains of this season were good and have ensured plenty of juicy grasses, which is the the top choice of the Socotri goat. As soon as the grasses are exhausted they will start picking their next […]

Coleus socotranus

Coleus socotranus

My first encounter of this species on Socotra, near the plateau above the cliffs of Hoq. The goats have easy access to this individual and have browsed it in the past. Fortunately there is plenty of grasses so far this year, which might provide time enough for it to grow flowers. As this was the […]

Teucrium socotranum

Teucrium socotranum

A large, lush and vital specimen of this species as it is growing out of reach for the goats. I’ve encountered it in rocky slopes where they are browsed by the goats, and never seen a specimen this large and vital. The vertical cliffs of Socotra are a safe heaven for many plant species that […]

Leucas spiculifolia

Leucas spiculifolia

A species found growing in cracks of vertical walls on boulders and cliffs. The leaves are spiny and unpleasant to the touch unless you’re careful. It has white flowers, but I did not encounter a single individual in bloom, unfortunately. Endemic.

Leucas spiculifolia

Leucas spiculifolia

This is a species I only encountered in a limited area, where it was abundant. It specializes in growing in cracks of vertical walls on boulders and cliffs. The leaves are spiny and unpleasant to the touch unless you’re careful. The lower individual was carrying fruits as well as two white flowers. The one above […]

Micromeria remota

Micromeria remota

I wish I had a week on top of Socotra as there are so incredibly many magnificent plants species and many grow only on socotra! This was the only specimen I could find on Skand (Skand), but with more days I’m certain I would have found magnificent speciemens if I could have climbed where goats […]

Lavandula nimmoi

Lavandula nimmoi

To find Lavender on Socotra was not expected, and my mindset was on this being an invasive or at least non-endemic species. But endemic it is! Again most were completely eaten by goats, but I managed to find one that was partly intact, at least one inflorescence. Endemic.

Lavandula nimmoi UV

Lavandula nimmoi UV

Appears much duller in UV compared to visible light. Endemic.

Leucas spiculifolia

Leucas spiculifolia

A heavily browsed specimen. This is what happens when this species is unable to grow out reach for the enormous number of goats on Socotra. I have mostly found leucas spiculifolia in cracks on cliff walls where they are growing undisturbed and are amazing to behold.

Leucas virgata

Leucas virgata

I found very few with flowers, and only this one with a health flower and intact foliage. All plants were stunted due to heavy grazing by goats. Endemic.

Teucrium socotranum

Teucrium socotranum

This plant is one of many interesting species I found in a very small area in a valley at 320 meters altitude. A river runs through on the valley floor, supporting lots of more water demanding species, but just a few meters up the mountain slopes a rocky a harsher environment with lots of plant […]

Hyptis frondosa

Hyptis frondosa

The protected areas of Chapada dos Guimaraes National Park is a treasure trove of plant species, and I was like a kid in a candy store! The number of plant species is enormous, and I am really saddened by the fact that perhaps 90% of the Cerrado has been destroyed. Native range is Brazil.

Klourt (Lycopus europaeus)

Klourt (Lycopus europaeus)

Naturlig utbredelse i Europa.

Bakketimian (Thymus pulegioides)

Bakketimian (Thymus pulegioides)

Naturlig utbredelse i Europa.

Dunkjempe (Plantago media)

Dunkjempe (Plantago media)

Aksveronika (Veronica spicata)

Aksveronika (Veronica spicata)

Smale og ru blader kjennetegner aksveronika. Naturlig utbredelse i Eurasia.

Dragehode (Dracocephalum ruyschiana)

Dragehode (Dracocephalum ruyschiana)

Naturlig utbredelse i Eurasia.

Naturlig utbredelse i Eurasia.

Eriope crassipes

Eriope crassipes

As I visited at the end of the dry season, the plateau was lush and green. Many of the plants species were in full bloom. Huanchaca Plateau is also called Caparu Meseta (Meseta de Caparú). Altitude: 839 metres. Native range is much of South America.

Kransmynte (Clinopodium vulgare)

Kransmynte (Clinopodium vulgare)
