Paraerva microphylla

Paraerva microphylla

Looks similar to Paraerva revoluta, but stems and leaves are glabrous (without hairs), opposed to P revoluta where stems and leaves have woolly hairs or short matted hairs – see this observation. Furthermore P revoluta is normally found on granite slopes of the Hagghier mountains, this is at 389 m elevation on limestone cliff. Endemic.

Arabian Jointed Glasswort (Suaeda vermiculata)

Arabian Jointed Glasswort (Suaeda vermiculata)

Erissel – the east-cape of Socotra, is the only place I have encountered this species. It’s a specialist that is able to thrive in the windswept and salty environment nearest to the ocean. It is a colony of plants in different stages of growth and age, ranging from deeply reds and oranges, to vibrant waxy […]

Atriplex farinosa

Atriplex farinosa

Erissel is the only place on Socotra (so far) I have encountered this species. It grows as a small colony in the sand dunes and I have not seen any signs of it spreading outwards (since I was here in 2015). Instead I found it to have shrunk somewhat, likely due to the severe cyclones […]

Paraerva microphylla

Paraerva microphylla

A healthy specimen soon in bloom. I found many of this species around the Arher sand dunes where they were all untouched by goats, as they still had plenty of grasses due to the good winter rains this year. It resembles Paraerva revoluta, but differs in that the stems and leaves are glabrous (no hairs), […]

Achyranthes aspera

Achyranthes aspera

This is the only specimen I found growing out in the open landscape that was not eaten by goats. Perhaps it was intact because it was leaning against a rock? The other ones I found were growing inside other plants that were either unpalatable or to thorny for the goats to bother reaching for them.

Arabian Jointed Glasswort (Suaeda vermiculata)

The sand dunes of Erissel – the Socotra east cape – have some very specialized plants thriving in the wind-swept sand. This species was in some places growing in dense mats. This location is windswept and hot, with only rain or brackish water available, but this is a specialist.

Achyranthes aspera

The inflorescence can grow very long, and this one was at least 50 cm long protected as it was inside the huge Juncus socotranus. Otherwise this would have been consumed by the goats! I was in fact in luck to even find this excellent section of foliage!

Mountain Knotgrass (Ouret lanata)

Mountain Knotgrass (Ouret lanata)

This plant is one of many interesting species I found in a very small area in a valley at 320 meters altitude. A river runs through on the valley floor, supporting lots of more water demanding species, but just a few meters up the mountain slopes a rocky a harsher environment with lots of plant […]

Naturlig utbredelse i temperert Eurasia.

Strandmelde (Atriplex littoralis)

Det vokser noen få stranmelder like ved bukkebeunurtene på nordvestsiden. Denne vokste så nær sjøen at ved høyvann litt over gjennomsnittet og større bølger, står den godt under vann – og det er jo slik den er tilpasset. Naturlig utbredelse i temperert Eurasia.

Gomphrena sp

Gomphrena sp

I spent very little time on the Cerrado or grassland sections of the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park, but on my way back to the village of Florida I stopped a few times to shoot some of the more conspicuous plants.

Sarcocornia pulvinata

Sarcocornia pulvinata

Grows very close to hot springs and is thus salt and mineral tolerant. Seems like Sedum. Altitude: 4402 metres.
