Commiphora planifrons

An unusual habit for a Commiphora planifrons, as the branches are usually growing horizontally. At a distance I first thought it to be a boswellia. It grows on a steep cliff on the Nait coast of southwestern Socotra. Going down to it from the safety of the plateau looked very dangerous, but with a careful and step by step approach I reached it.

The fact that it has reached this size baffles me, as the goats eat at every living plant, stopping it from reaching its potential. Commiphora planifrons is found as stunted and prostrate miniatures up on the plateau, but for some reason this one has been left untouched.

Elevation: 263 meters.

Endemic.
