Black-winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus)

It’s amazing how birds can navigate vast distances and find tiny plates of food like this small lagoon in the middle of the Shuab valley on the west coast of Socotra. Unknown why, many of the grey mangrove trees are dead and it seems there is little regrowth, which could suggest that the mangroves are going to be extinct in this location sometime in the future. Hopefully the birds’ food supply will not face the same fate.

The small body of water here seems rich in insects and crustaceans as there are many species of bird here. The water is very close to the ocean, only separated by a 60 meter or so sand dune.

These birds are soon to leave for their summer breeding grounds.
