What an amazing experience it was to see this rare spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus). I spotted it driving to the next destination on my schedule, and could not believe it when I saw this bear high up a hillside.
I first tried to walk, but with camera gear adding weight I had to accept defeat and hope that a gravel road could provide means to get closer to it by car.
At more than 4000m / 13100ft elevation I was definitely the underdog, but I managed to track it and and it’s heading so I could wait for it higher up and enjoy its natural behaviour in one of its few remaining places to roam. Like so many other species this amazing creature is threatened by us and our destructive ways.
