Knowing when to expect big surfs is one thing, but taking advantage of them when they do arrive is another. You might not see any great waves during your stay, or find out that when you were hiking the interior, there were amazing surfs lasting just a couple of hours.

Locals know this all too well, and those able to will take a breather from work, chores or other engagements and ride those precious waves until they are all gone after an hour or two.

I checked the tidal predictions and went to see how accurate they were. Lo and behold, the waves were coming and so did several surfers.

Blinky Beach might not be the most scenic of Lord Howe Island beaches, but for surfing it’s great.
