Campfire on top of Socotra

On top of Socotra, at 1500 meters above sea level, you are open to the elements, which often is fog and mist, which makes it very cold after sunset. This evening was a mix of clouds moving in and clear and dark skies, yet it was very cold, and a campfire made all the difference! Add a pot of tea and it is a wonderful experience with only the natural sounds. No artificial lights in sight, no cars or even the sound of airplanes!

The locals sitting around the fire seen here, that assisted me on this trek, spontaneously sang traditional songs that resembled birds in a forest responding to each others song in succession.

If you take a closer look you’ll see two young goats sharing the warmth of the fire, and treated like pets. Goats are at the heart of Socotri life, and you’ll find them everywhere except on sheer cliffs where only mountaineers can go. Unfortunately that means that endemic flora only reach maturity on these locations.
