I found quite a few of the common sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) in the small mangrove lagoon in the Shuab valley of western Socotra. They are migrants and will soon leave northwards to their breeding ground.
It’s incredible how they have found this small speck of water on a tiny speck of rock in the vastness of the Indian ocean. Hopefully the water and food will still be here in the future, as there are few wetlands in the region.
