There are a few access roads to the Rio Las Piedras which is the only way to the Amazon Research and Conservation Center (ARCC), and on my way back we chose to drive the one that is the shortest way from ARCC, but is longer on land. This cause some problems when there have been rain showers, as there are several land owners each with a gate, that they close when the road gets wet, to keep the road from deteriorating too much.
This day it had rained a few hours ago, and we passed all but the very last gate, where the one in charge was a middle aged woman with an incredibly low interest in tourism and service. She spent an inordinately amount of time getting the key from her house, and wondered if I wanted to leave? What a stupid question? In the meantime lots of motorcycles were allowed to pass, and it became clear that they were the ones making the most damage to the road! Go figure!
Thus I had to spend my time her as best I could, and that was not easy as it was a farm with all the forest cut down. I did find this butterfly species, though.
