The oxbow lake at the Amazon Research and Conservation Center is teaming with life, and is an excellent location to get up and close to the smooth-billed ani (Crotophaga ani). As there is no current you can drift silently with the wind and when you sit still be somewhat regarded as part of the natural flow of things.
Normally the anis are jumpy and take to the wings long before I can get a decent shot, but here I had a great encounter, as it was sitting calmly in the low evening sun while I was slowly drifting on the lake.
