Pousada Xaraés, Pantanal

The sun is setting behind the trees, and dusk is fast approaching. This vista is typical of this part of the Pantanal. Lush green even at the end of the dry season, the jabiru storks are still finding plenty of food in the myriads of pools, and here and there you’ll come across fences seen in the back here.

Is it a park, one might wonder? It seems so perfectly groomed and maintained. Yet this is a cattle ranch. In part that is. The owner has set aside a large portion of his land to be natural and unmanaged. In this photo you see a balance between intrusion and nature, and during my stay the cows were only occasionally seen or heard.

Come the wet season and even humans are once in a while driven away as they cannot even navigate by the submerged fence posts – the only means of knowing where you are, unless you are so in tune with the landscape that you can navigate by the trees. So even with boats you can get utterly lost when the rains rule.
