The grey-necked wood Rail (Aramides cajaneus) has mesmerising red eyes!

The river that runs through Fazenda San Fransico is deep throughout the dry season and thus is a treasure trove of food for a variety of birds. Many have chicks now, and I was lucky to find two that this adult was keeping an eye on.

I didn’t notice this chick had caught a crab before I got home and looked through the images! I must admit I didn’t even know this river had any crabs!
