Dust Devil

At midday the heat of the sun has created a turbulent atmosphere, and here resulted in a beautiful dust devil. One of many during my few days here, but in fact only 3 grew to such well defined tornado-like “suckers” like this one.

This is beautiful to watch but is really just an indication of the immense amount of volcanic dust here on the Altiplano. Even on a relatively calm morning you have a lot of volcanic particles in the air.

Even at night I could see the dust pass the light cone of my flashlight.

The rainy season will end the relentless dust in the air, but it’s only replaced by impassable stretches of land and muddy roads even 4x4s struggle with.

Altitude: 4059 metres.
