The inflorescence of wild cocoa (Herrania mariae) is otherwordly beautiful and mysterious, and unlike any I have encountered. Of course there are countless beauties in the primary forest of Yasuni, but most are in the canopy. The wild cocoa has a different strategy that makes it so accessible to passers by like me – on the dark forest floor.
This tree grows alongside the path to the clay lick – not far from the welcome centre of Napo Wildlife Center.
Native range is Colombia to Peru and North Brazil.
