Vanessa myrinna was the third and most common of three species of butterflies that were seen around the path to and from Roraima.
It was seen on the path or on rocks close by the path. If disturbed it was quick to move back and reclaim its territory.

This is Vanessa myrinna (Nymphalidae: Nymphalinae), a close relative of the common European species Vanessa (Cynthia) cardui.
Hi Andrew and many thanks for your classification! Name updated.
I did see the resemblance, that’s why it’s so great to have it classified so that I have the facts in that regards. It’s fantastic to see nature’s similarities in design and behaviour when observing around the world! In Costa Rica (Osa Peninsula) I heard a grasshopper with a sound very similar to Tettigonia viridissima, but it was played very differently. When I finally saw it, it was strikingly similar to the European one.
I’t’s amazing how nature comes up with such similarities, yet with such vast distances between habitats.
