Maigull (Chrysosplenium alternifolium)

Maigull (Chrysosplenium alternifolium)

Engsnelle (Equisetum pratense)

Engsnelle (Equisetum pratense)

Wild Pineapple (Ananas sp)

Wild Pineapple (Ananas sp)

As I got close to the Huanchaca Plateau I noticed many new types of plants compared to further down the slopes of the plateau, and it seemed to increase as I closed in on the plateau itself. This species is also found on the pampas part of the park. Altitude: 795 metres. Please help me [...]

The Condoriri park was a treasure trove of plant species, and I wish I had several days here, as my few hours was far from enough to explore all the incredible miniature plants growing here. Altitude: 4503 metres.

Paja brava (Festuca orthophylla)

Paja brava (Festuca orthophylla)

This is perhaps the most abundant and eye-catching grass on the Altiplano. Even outside the flowering season they are incredibly decorative, and in particular those growing in solitude are really amazing. Even though the grass is incredibly tough, pointy and to me very dry, it’s food for many of the grass-eaters including the llamas. Here [...]

Cardon cactus (Echinopsis tarijensis)

Cardon cactus (Echinopsis tarijensis)

When not in bloom it looks just like the white-flowering Echinopsis atacamensis, but this one is much rarer, and I found only one with flower here on the slopes of Cerro Tunupa. Altitude: 3989 metres.

Altiplano plant 15

Altiplano plant 15

A few weeks earlier and I would have seen all this as flowers – a beautiful sight I imagine. This species seems abundant here, and is undoubtedly able to spread far and wide with the wind. The amount of seeds per plant is staggering, and sometimes so many are released that it looks like smoke [...]

Cardon cactus (Echinopsis atacamensis ssp. pasacana)

Cardon cactus (Echinopsis atacamensis ssp. pasacana)

The white-spined variety is my favourite of the cacti here, and with the backdrop of the white saltflats they create a surreal feeling of ice and snow! Altitude: 3716 metres.

Cardon cactus (Echinopsis atacamensis ssp. pasacana)

Cardon cactus (Echinopsis atacamensis ssp. pasacana)

The flowers of this species are simply gorgeous! Huge, juicy and dripping with resin! Without these cacti, the local insect and bird populations would have a much harder time. Altitude: 3716 metres.

Cardon cactus (Echinopsis atacamensis ssp. pasacana)

Cardon cactus (Echinopsis atacamensis ssp. pasacana)

Many of the local guides regard the white-spined Echinopsis atacamensis as a separate species from the brown-spined, but evidently this is one species that has a way of coming in two varities! Altitude: 3716 metres.

The flowers were less torn here at this small lagoon compared to Laguna Colorada. Altitude: 4139 metres.

Altiplano plant 04 (Asteraceae)

Altiplano plant 04 (Asteraceae)

This salt and mineral tolerant plant thrives here and has generated large mats close to the water. Further down there is only naked shores which every odd years will be flooded. The last time was a couple of years ago when the desert got about 2 metres of snow in a couple of days. Altitude: [...]

Altiplano plant 04 (Asteraceae)

Altiplano plant 04 (Asteraceae)

This hardy plant grows where the high watermark is, and is thus very salt and mineral tolerant. You can see the salt and mineral deposits to the bottom right. Altitude: 4300.

Cactus (Cumulopuntia boliviana)

Cactus (Cumulopuntia boliviana)

When the flower is gone, the remaining part is well protected from being reached, so what species is the fruit aimed at? Only insects and small rodents will reach the fruit unharmed, so perhaps that’s it? Altitude: 4004 metres.

Cactus (Cumulopuntia boliviana)

Cactus (Cumulopuntia boliviana)

This is the yellowish variant of this species found here on the Bolivian Altiplano. It appears it does not grow to the huge size of the orange variant (Cumulopuntia boliviana ssp. ignescens)), and also the orange variant seems to bloom a bit earlier than the yellowish species. Altitude: 4004 metres.

Yareta (Azorella compacta)

Yareta (Azorella compacta)

This enormous and partially dying specimen is growing by one of many incredibly beautiful rock outcrops here called Valle de las Rocas, or Rock Valley. Even in this photo an artistic face with a huge eye appears. The living Yareta only adds to the wonder as its shape and age seems to blend in with [...]

Polylepis tarapacana

Polylepis tarapacana

Some of the highest elevation of Polyepis forests are found in this park, and in particular on the slopes of Nevada Sajama seen in the background here. This slope has more medium-sized versions, but in some areas they grow to forests with heights of 3-4 metres or more. Despite the harsh conditions, these trees have [...]

Yareta (Azorella compacta)

Yareta (Azorella compacta)

Perhaps the plant that has fascinated me the most on the Altiplano. It reminds me of coral reefs and the Brain coral (Faviidae), and grows comparably slowly. It can also live up to 3000 years, or even more as humans have used it for firewood and thus might have killed the oldest specimens. When a [...]

Yareta (Azorella compacta)

Yareta (Azorella compacta)

Most will think this is a moss, but it’s a very slow-growing perennial that can grow to huge individuals. It grows less than 2 cm per year, so the largest individuals are several thousand years of age! During flowering there are huge amount of insects drawn to the sticky, sweet resin from the flowers. Even [...]

Cactus (Cumulopuntia boliviana ssp. ignescens)

Cactus (Cumulopuntia boliviana ssp. ignescens)

These flowers are grand and beautiful, and are some of the plants as well. Some individuals grow to monumental sizes that simply makes you stop in your tracks to wonder and ponder how this can be in an environment so hostile. I was lucky to experience the last of the flowers on this specimen, but [...]

Blodstorkenebb (Geranium sanguineum)

Blodstorkenebb (Geranium sanguineum)

Tangmelde (Atriplex prostrata ssp. prostrata)

Tangmelde (Atriplex prostrata ssp. prostrata)

Karakteristiske glatte, pilspisse og taggete blader i høstfarger.

Tangmelde (Atriplex prostrata ssp. prostrata)

Tangmelde (Atriplex prostrata ssp. prostrata)
